What is bruxism?
Bruxism is the involuntary grinding or clenching of the teeth, often during sleep. Over time, it can wear down enamel, crack teeth and create chronic tension in the jaw muscles.
Many patients discover the problem during a routine visit in our general dentistry in Gibraltar service, where we detect early signs of tooth wear, fractures or jaw tension.
Common signs of teeth grinding
Jaw pain or stiffness
Often worse in the morning or after stressful days.
Worn or chipped teeth
Grinding gradually damages enamel and restorations.
Headaches or facial tension
Muscle overload can cause tension headaches and fatigue.
What causes bruxism?
Bruxism can be related to stress or anxiety, poor sleep quality, bite imbalance, missing teeth, or orthodontic problems.
In some cases, a misaligned bite may contribute to grinding. Our orthodontic treatment in Gibraltar can help correct these issues when needed.
Why treatment is important
Without treatment, bruxism can lead to progressive damage and ongoing pain. It may also contribute to TMJ problems and jaw pain .
- Tooth wear and enamel loss
- Chips, cracks or fractures
- Sensitivity and gum recession
- Jaw pain and muscle tension
- TMJ discomfort or clicking
- Headaches related to jaw strain
How we treat bruxism
Custom night guard (occlusal splint)
A precision-made guard protects your teeth while you sleep and reduces overload on the jaw muscles.
Bite assessment
We examine your bite and jaw function to identify stress points, wear patterns and contributing factors.
Orthodontic solutions (when needed)
If your bite is contributing to grinding, aligners or braces may help reduce the cause.
