Swollen Parotid Gland

The parotid glands are the largest salivary glands in the human body. They are located on both sides of the face, just in front of the ears, and produce saliva which helps lubricate the mouth and support digestion.

When the parotid gland becomes swollen or inflamed it can cause facial swelling, discomfort and difficulty opening the mouth. In some situations swelling in this area may also be associated with infections affecting the mouth or teeth.

Swelling near the jaw or ear should always be evaluated if it is persistent, painful or accompanied by fever or dental pain.

What is the parotid gland?

The parotid glands are responsible for producing saliva which helps keep the mouth moist and protects the teeth and gums from bacteria.

These glands release saliva through small ducts located near the upper molars. If these ducts become blocked or infected the gland may become inflamed and swollen.

Symptoms of a swollen parotid gland

The most common symptoms include:

  • Swelling near the ear or jaw
  • Pain when chewing or opening the mouth
  • Dry mouth
  • Fever in cases of infection
  • An unpleasant taste in the mouth

The severity of these symptoms can vary depending on the underlying cause of the inflammation.

Causes of parotid gland swelling

Several conditions can cause inflammation of the parotid gland. Some of the most common causes include:

  • Bacterial or viral infections
  • Blocked salivary ducts
  • Salivary gland stones
  • Dehydration
  • Inflammatory conditions

In certain cases swelling near the jaw may also be related to oral infections or dental problems that require evaluation by a dentist.

Treatment for a swollen parotid gland

Treatment will depend on the underlying cause. Mild cases may improve with hydration, massage of the gland and medication to control infection or inflammation.

However if swelling is associated with dental pain, infection or facial swelling it is important to seek professional advice.
